Donald Leon VanSchaick, age 77, passed away at his home in Zumbro Falls, Minnesota on October 19th, 2023. Don was born March 1st, 1946, in Rochester, Minnesota to Leon and Hazel (Wahl) VanSchaick. Don joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 20 and served his country in Vietnam from 1966 -1967. He was honorably discharged after 3 years in the service.

Don worked as a painter for the majority of his life, but his true passion was music. Don was an extraordinarily gifted guitar player and singer – self taught by the age of 12. As stated by a good friend, Don had more than knowledge of music, but an understanding. He never credited himself as one of the best, but considered so by those who knew him. Don played in many bands during his musical career, along with playing a jazz solo two nights a week at the Red Wood Room in Rochester for many years. In 1989 he married Kay McBride, and together they had one son, Zane. The two later divorced in 2001. Don was a devoted father and grandfather, always checking in to make sure everyone was safe. Don enjoyed the simple things in life – taking daily road trips along the Zumbro River, building model wooden airplanes, listening to, and discussing music and politics.

Don is survived by his son, Zane VanSchaick (Alexandra Wurl); grandchildren, Allyson Schuchard, Cloey VanSchaick, and Wyatt VanSchaick; three nieces, and one nephew. He was proceeded in death by his parents, and brother, Charles VanSchaick.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
